In 1805, the Ducal government of Saalfeld-Coburg recognized the special value of the slate quarry and acquired all shares. The quarry was thus placed under state control and renamed the "Ducal Slate Quarry of Lehesten." Skilled officials were placed there, who, with their expertise, were able to increase production. However, the local slate miners continued to be the losers, receiving little pay for their hard work. This led to the first unrest among Lehesten's workers in 1807.
