The name Ostia derives from Latin ostium "entrance; Mouth ", which means the Tibermündung. The name Ostia Antica (Old Ostia) is used to distinguish it from the newly founded district of Ostia in the 1920s. The northeast adjoining modern district is also called after the excavations Ostia Antica.
