The Westensee (altitude 3 m above sea level) is located in the community Achterwehr in the district Rendsburg-Eckernförde. It is the fifth largest lake in Schleswig-Holstein and is characterized as a calcareous lowland lake with a relatively large catchment area, without pronounced temperature stratification. With its location between the cities of Kiel and Rendsburg, it forms the center of the Westensee Nature Park. It drains over Schleswig-Holstein's largest river, the Eider and reaches via the Achterwehrer shipping channel and the Kiel Canal. The Westensee formed at the end of the last ice age, the Vistula Ice Age, as tongue basin. The basin is surrounded by ramparts of high Endmoränenzüge. In the south it is bounded by the Tüteberg (height 88 m above sea level). The Westensee is used as recreational water, whereby motor vehicles are not permitted. Use by non-motorized pleasure boats is regulated. One may well cross the lake in the course of the Eider, but otherwise has to live for trips in the lake either in a neighboring community or pay a user fee.
The lake has swimming areas in the places Westensee, Hohenhude, Wrohe and Wulfsfelde.deacademic.com/dic.nsf/dewiki/1503223
