Around 40 hectares around the 180 meter high Silberberg in the Lower Saxony district of Osnabrück are under nature protection. In the 18th century, ores containing silver were still mined here. It is remarkable that the region has been strictly protected since 1937. The main concern is the preservation, care and development of the nutrient-poor grassland and the old forests, as well as protecting the endangered calamine from extinction. Various species of bats live in the abandoned tunnels and eagle owls have been spotted in the quarry.
