The Hobart Cenotaph stands on a hill overlooking the city and the River Derwent. From 1838 to 1923 the Queens Battery, part of Hobart's coastal defenses, was on the site.
The War Memorial, originally dedicated to those who died in World War I, was unveiled on December 13, 1925. It was designed by the Hobart company Hutchinson and Walker.
