Lake Naret is located at an altitude of 2,310 meters. Naret is an artificial lake and the road leading to the lake is only open in the summer months. The nearest municipality is Lavizzara and is about 20 kilometers away.

To better describe the climb: up to Fusio and from Fusio to Lago del Sambuco is steep but not brutal (max. 13% or so...and only rarely). But there are a lot of meters in altitude (approx. 1400hm) from Locarno (if you drive the whole way).

From Lago del Sambuco you first drive flat along the lake, because the first 150m are on "normal" gradients (like from Fusio). Then a short plateau and you greet the first wall. Here it goes uphill at 15-16% (if not occasionally more) for what feels like an eternity.

You can recover briefly on the second and final plateau (max 8%) and then you start with more walls, although none are as long as the first. Here 15-18% is not uncommon but you mostly drive at 12-13% with very few sections of 10%.

Shortly before the end there is a descent to the last slope and on the dam.

Definitely fantastic, but you have to be able to do it. 😉

And I had little to no cell phone reception...

As others have already said: It's tough, steep, and beautiful here!

It's best to split the climb into shorter stages, so the 2,000 meters of elevation gain over 30 kilometers from Bignasco aren't quite as terrifyingly daunting.

From Bignasco to Prato Sornico, it's rarely very steep. There are a few flat sections where you can pick up a decent pace.

After Mogno (visit the church in Botta) and up to Fusio, things really get going for the first time. Many hairpin bends soften the incredibly nasty ramps, but your legs will still be tested here!

Up to the Sambucco reservoir, it becomes truly idyllic, green, and quiet. There are a few tough climbs, but even here, the difficulty is still manageable. There's a fountain at the summer restaurant: fill up your bidons again, because there are only streams and gullies here.

After the relaxing flat section by the lake, the final and most strenuous part of the climb follows. The scenery is stunning, but it's steep all the way to the top! Wow!

difficult climb but the view is just a dream

The view up there is awesome, with the steep stretches of road I asked myself, why am I doing this to myself? At the age of 67, it was worth it to torment me a little (without electricity!!)

Very difficult climb as the road surface is also a challenge. Arriving at the top and enjoying the many views is simply terrific. Goats often cross the street, sometimes a herd of cows.
