    Hiking

The Kamakaiʻa Hills are volcanic vents which output magma from a series of channels leading further up Kīlauea toward the active crater. The hills have been consistently volcanically active in recent history, and the unique chemical compounds and lava type exhibited nearby make them a source of significant research. Kamakaiʻa means "the eye of the fish", possibly because of the shape of the conic vent formations.

Hikers may continue along the Kaʻū Desert Trail for as long as they wish, but this marks a good spot to turn around if you parked near the Footprints Trail.
