In 1974, a volcanic opening appeared to the east of Luamanu. From here, lava began to spill over Chain of Craters Road, destroying the forest's path and filling Luamanu crater with about 50 feet of lava. Today, on the crater walls, you can still see the highest point that lava reached before it drained out of the crater.
