South of Lisbon at the delta of the Rio Sado river lies the historic town of "Alcácer do Sal". According to archaeological finds, the settlement of the area around Alcácer do Sal began between the Neolithic and Phoenician periods, the Roman Empire and subsequent Islamic settlement. In 715, the Moors came to the region and made Alcacer their provincial capital. The city and its mighty castle were then conquered in 1217 after a two-month siege by the Christians under King Alfonso II and his crusaders in the "Fifth Crusade" as they wintered in Portugal on the way to Palestine. Today there is a hotel (posada) in the castelo.
