The most famous legend of Nyons is that of the Pontias. This legend seeks to explain a local climatic phenomenon: the Pontias, a wind from the northeast whose morning breeze purifies the atmosphere and refreshes the hot summer mornings (but also the cold winter mornings!). This local wind appears at dawn and its action continues until 10 or 11 am. It is at the origin of the dry and healthy microclimate that characterizes Nyons. Walking towards the Col du Pontias, which overlooks Nyons, you can find the Trou du Pontias, a set of scree from which, it is said, comes the wind that cools the city.

The eponymous Pontias is a local dry and cool NE wind that blows from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m.

If you follow the "Sentier botanique du Devès" theme trail in the mountainous surroundings of Nyon, you will reach the Trou du Pontias at its end. It's not really spectacular here, but it's worth the walk for the sake of the walk and there's a pretty legend surrounding the Pontias.
