Bülgenauel is a district in the east of the city of Hennef and lies in a loop of the meandering Sieg. The name "Bülgenauel" is made up of the words "Bülgen" and "Auel". "Bülgen" refers to a "bump" created here by the river Sieg on its gliding slope. "Auel" goes back to the "Auelgau", which was created in Frankish times. After driving out the Romans, the Franks created their own administration. To make it easier to govern the vast empire, the country was divided into nomes. The counts helped to administer the Gaue. The Auelgau in the Hennefer area also belonged to one of these districts. The Gaugraf des Auelgaus had his castle on the Sigiberg (today Michaelsberg in Siegburg).
In the Middle Ages, Bülgenauel was a separate honour, which belonged to the parish of Uckerath. The people used to live from agriculture and animal husbandry, fishing in the Sieg and wine growing on the Stachelberg on the other side of the Sieg.
From 1806 to 1813 Bülgenauel belonged to the canton of Hennef in the Grand Duchy of Berg and formed one of the 31 municipalities in the canton.
Until August 1, 1969, Bülgenauel belonged to the municipality of Uckerath. As part of the municipal reorganization, the town of Bülgenauel, like Uckerath, was incorporated into the then new municipality of Hennef.
