Athassel Priory sits on the River Suir and is the largest medieval priory in Ireland, stretching over a 4-acre plot.

The quiet beauty of the sight belies its past as a major urban centre with a population of 2,000. It was established as a Augustinian monastery in the 12th century and dedicated to St. Edmund.

The site is free to access but you will have to step off the bike and jump over a stile and cross a medieval stone bridge to reach the Abbey. Well worth it to see such a stunning ruin.

Built in the 12th century, Athassel is the largest medieval monastery in the country. Park up your bike and use the stone steps to climb over the wall to have a look around. Despite being in ruins, a large part of the building is intact with beautiful architecture, statues and carvings to discover.
