The Valley of the Bosbeek is a vast nature reserve of over 1000 hectares. The Bosbeek rises in the Wildbroek in As and meanders undisturbed to Aldeneik (Maaseik) where it flows into the Maas.

The northern side of the Bosbeek valley in Opglabbeek is a gently sloping bank zone with several tributaries and many spring areas. In the past, there were many hay meadows here that were mowed by local farmers until the 1960s. Afterwards, they became less interesting because the plots were too wet for modern agriculture. Many of these hay plots were then purchased for recreational purposes. Over the years, Natuurpunt has been able to purchase many of these plots. The chalets were demolished and the fish ponds converted into natural amphibian pools. Many plots were also restored to hay meadows.
