The white-painted field stone building to the south of the market was built towards the end of the 12th century with a rectangular ship, but was later greatly modified. Only the small east window of the choir, which was reopened in 1976, is original. All other windows of the Romanesque building received their uniform size and arch shape in 1863.

Today's appearance of the St. Jacobi Church is primarily the result of extensive renovation and expansion measures from 1890 to 1892. Pastor Stoltenberg engaged the district inspector Adalbert Hotzen from Schleswig, who was also responsible for the tower construction and renovation of the cathedral. Hotzen extended the ship around a window axis and built the stately neo-Gothic west tower out of yellow bricks with a high top and a wide, richly designed portal. He had the wooden ceiling extending into the attic moved into the nave. It rests on wooden trusses that are reminiscent of ship frames.
