The water gate is part of the medieval city fortifications from the middle of the 15th century, built during the Hussite raids and preserved in ruins, and stands on the eastern edge of the historic old town. This city gate is called the Wassertor, because the Pegnitz flows by in the immediate vicinity, or the Lower Gate. The construction dates from 1601/02 and is the result of a renovation of the medieval gate. It has five upper floors and another floor in the half-hip roof. Directly in front of it is the paving customs house from 1690.

The water gate was once part of the medieval town fortifications of Hersbruck. The tower was built in 1601 and 1602. The city coat of arms of the time can be seen above the archway, but looks a little different today: a deer jumps over the bridge between the two towers instead of a ram.

Built in 1690 as a customs house for the city. Sold between 1935 and 1942 to the last customs officer, master shoemaker Hans Schuster. Hence the name the shoemaker's house.
