The Melkader is now a channeled creek remnant near the village and has become part of the Green Ring (green lung) around Kallo.

    Historical indication:
The Melkader was a creek area on the Scheldt. The Melkader probably originated at the Saint Elisabeth flood on 19 November 1404, possibly even earlier and probably expanded and deepened during the floods of 1421, 1526, 15.30, 1532, 1551 and 1570. In the winter of 1584/1585 Alexander Farnese had the Parma canal dug between the Gentsevaart and the Melkader.

On June 21, 1638, during the Eighty Years' War, an encounter took place between the Southern and the States Army in the area between Kruisdijk and the Melkader. This resulted in a major defeat for the States. Numerous Dutch soldiers were killed and hundreds were driven into the Melkader.

The Melkader is a channeled creek remnant, a silent witness to an old estuary of the Scheldt. It served as a drainage channel for the polders and as a waterway to ship peat and later sugar beets. Now you can fish, walk or cycle here in peace.
