The Ems rises in the Senne near Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock in the state part of Westphalia, flows through the district and the town of Gütersloh and through the Westphalian Bay in a northwesterly direction roughly parallel to the Teutoburg Forest and from the state border to Lower Saxony, between Rheine and Salzbergen, then north to the North Sea. From the Dollart, the Ems forms the partly disputed border with the Dutch province of Groningen. It flows into the North Sea about 27 kilometers northwest of Emden between Pilsum and Eemshaven.
