With 25 shrimp boats that regularly head to the romantic Greetsiel harbor, we are home to the largest fleet of boats in East Frisia. In addition to the main catch, the crabs, which are actually called garnet, small quantities of flat fish such as plaice, shags and sole are also landed. The historic harbor is over 600 years old.

Here you can breathe history and seafaring romance in a unique environment of charming historic gabled houses and idyllic alleys. And: you enjoy pure sea air!

The Leysiel lock has existed since 1991, separating the fishing port and marina from the open North Sea. Up to eight cutters can pass through here at the same time. This means that the Greetsiel harbor is independent of the tide; ebb and flow “remain outside”. The old Sieltor is over 200 years old and a popular meeting place for Greetsiel guests. The Greetsieler Sieltief flows here.

An absolute highlight on every tour through the Krummhörn. Please use the signposted bicycle parking spaces and do not drive directly to the port. In season it makes the stay easier for everyone.

          The harbor in Greetsiel
The port of Greetsiel is home to the largest cutter fleet in East Frisia. Around 30 cutters have sometimes moored here. Shellfishers, excursion steamers, Dutch tjalken and a sailboat harbor complete the picture. The harbor itself is independent of the tide. Due to a lock on the Leyhörn, which was completed in the early 1990s, the ebb and flow of the river have lost their influence.

If the weather is good, I can stay here for hours and look at the cutters.

Very nice harbor, the place is also very nice and worth seeing. Unfortunately also totally overcrowded, and that on a normal weekday in the pre-season. The bike ride from the Westermarsch to the Pilsen lighthouse was beautiful.

The place is always worth a visit, but unfortunately the tourist knick knack shops have sadly spoiled this place.

In times without the masses of day tourists, Greetsiel is a picturesque, idyllic fishing village. The peace and the touch of romance lets you forget everyday life. In the time of the day tourists, escape is the order of the day.

Greetsiel is a lovely little dreamy crab fishing town with a special flair.
Many small cafés and restaurants invite you to eat, relax or just flambé.
For me the greatest pleasure is the fresh shrimp roll from your hand and the sound of seagulls screaming in the background as they try to catch their prey.

Greetsiel is most beautiful in winter, when mass tourism has left the town.

Just ask the residents of Greetsiel what they say about these crowds of people who appear in the town every day during the season like migratory locusts 🕳️🕳️🕳️

Gentle tourism would certainly make sense for the place.

Everything was very nice, I really liked it, but I was there in April, out of season.
If everyone who complains about mass tourism stayed at home, the place would be much quieter.
