A striking railway bridge, built in 1855 on the Deinze-Tielt-Adinkerke railway line. This bridge is one of the few remaining Vierendeel bridges, and was first named after engineer A. Vierendeel (°1852-†1940). It consists of a truss of iron beams, without diagonal cross-connections, which are attached to each other with more than 80,000 rivets. Each bridge section weighs 410 tons or 820 tons in total. Several campaigns have been held to preserve the iron bridge and the old Leie arm, such as by Machelen artist Roger Raveel and Grammenaar Laurent Vanhaesebrouck. The iron railway bridge over the Leie arm in Grammene was officially named the Lorenzo Bridge. For years, the iron bridge has been popularly named after its savior Laurent ‘Lorenzo’ Vanhaesebroeck.
