The Sanctuary, among the most valuable Renaissance buildings in Umbria, stands just outside the walls of Castel Rigone. Its origins are linked to a miraculous event in 1490: according to tradition, a young woman, drawing water from the public well, saw a Lady appear, who requested that a chapel be built on that spot. The building, constructed starting in 1494, partly as a votive offering against the plague, is made entirely of sandstone.

Castel Rigone is located at 653 meters, near Lake Trasimeno and wooded areas. Since the Middle Ages, the village was known for its excellence in the treatment of respiratory diseases. The church of the Madonna dei Miracoli contains a very beautiful and important fresco, created by Giovanni Battista Caporali.
