The center of the medieval city center of Karlstadt am Main, which dates back to the late 12th century and is today largely reconstructed, is the market square. The square is dominated by the beginning of the 15th century Historical Town Hall with its stepped gable and the mighty double-flighted staircase, which was the only access to the upper floor until the 17th century. On the ground floor of the town hall there is a three-aisled market hall (today a restaurant), on the upper floor the largest civic hall in Franconia. The stone parapet on the pedestal in front of the pointed-arched portal to the first floor bears the coat of arms of the Würzburg Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn. The first is adorned with the clock tower of the town hall clock - below it stands a niche in 1718 by the Karlstadter sculptor Kilian Schüßler created figure, called "Schwedenmännle", a landmark of the city, which commemorates the occupation of the city in the Thirty Years' War by Swedish troops.

Picturesque building in the center of Karlstadt in the pedestrian zone.
On the ground floor is the "Ratskeller" with regional and Greek cuisine. In good weather also outdoor catering.

The main tower with gate is at the beginning of the Maingasse and you pass it, if you go from the river Main to the marketplace.

The Karlsburg is the ruin of a spur castle on a broad rock spur on the left bank of the Main opposite the city of Karlstadt, about 25 km northwest of Würzburg. North of the castle was the associated valley settlement in the district of today's district Karlburg.

The exact founding date of the city of Karlstadt is unknown. But it is clear that the foundation dates back to Konrad of Querfurt, between 1198 and 1202 Bishop of Würzburg, who had the city to defend the territory of the Würzburg bishopric against the Counts of Rieneck. Thus, the city was built on an Italian model according to plan with a nearly rectangular floor plan on the right bank of the Main, a fortress, completely surrounded by a city wall.
Today, the old town with its numerous half-timbered houses, especially in the warm season a popular destination.

The old town in summer is a crowd puller for young and old. Here it is worthwhile to stop in one of the small cafes.
