The Tretto plateau is an area with an ancient mining tradition: as early as the 15th century silver, lead, copper and iron were extracted from deposits of modest dimensions. On the other hand, the subsequent extraction of kaolin was remarkable, a white and refined clay from which precious porcelain and majolica are obtained.

Simplifying the process: the kaolin was extracted in the tunnel during the winter; stored outside for several months to favor its crumbling under the atmospheric agents; washed and decanted in wooden tubs to remove impurities; dried in the form of 'panetti' in the characteristic canopies called 'casoni' (still present and partly restored and reused by the contradaioli). From the early 1900s, with the Pancera family, the activity passed from artisanal/manual to industrial/mechanized, creating an expanded and modernized complex over the decades and with progress; finally abandoned in the 80s.

Now it is increasingly invaded by vegetation and brambles, and access is forbidden because it has unsafe roofs and floors.

In Schio, in the former Caserma Cella, there is the Geomineralogical and Kaolin Museum (open on Saturday afternoons) which explores the history and working of rock in the area with an entire section dedicated to it.
