The Mills Observatory was built on Balgay Hill in 1935. It was the first purpose built public observatory in the UK. Still open to the public and free to enter it's open every day and into the evening on weekdays but seasonal opening hours apply so do check before visiting.
Balgay Hill is an area of higher land within Dundee. The summit is at 143m which gives good views over Dundee and north into the highlands. The woodland here is managed by the Woodland Trust. It's an area of old deciduous woods with a few non-native species added as specimen trees in the 19th century.

Unfortunately, the observatory is closed in summer. And outside of the building there is no view because of the tall trees.
