The Plaza Mayor and the Town Hall are the nerve center of the city.
This civic and commercial space dates back to the 17th century, when after one of his visits to Palencia, Charles I decided to promote its creation.
It responds to the typical style that defines the main squares of the region, as it exhibits a rectangular shape and is supported on three of its four sides, the last being occupied by the Town Hall building, in a neoclassical style and inaugurated in 1878. Inside and presiding over the main staircase is a mural by the Palencia painter Germán Calvo, which describes the history and tribulations of the city.
The Plaza Mayor is dominated by the monument to Alonso Berruguete, one of the main sculptural groups of Victorio Macho. Its almost four meters in height and its contrast of white in the stone and black in the Berruguete statue allow it to dominate the entire square in front of the City Hall.
