In early 1938, the old church of Schulen was demolished. The demolition served as a foundation for the new church. Only the sturdy tower was spared and was classified by Royal Decree on 3 June 1950 for its historical, artistic and scientific value. In September 1951, a restoration plan was approved for an amount of 194,728 francs. In May 1957, contractor Van Loy from Herselt started the work, but in the night of Monday 1 to Tuesday 2 July of the same year, the residents of the village centre of Schulen were suddenly startled by a fierce fire. Flames several metres high rose from the spire. And you can read the rest at herk-de-stad.be/over-herk-de-stad/erfgoedinventaris/schulen/gebouwen/oude-toren-van-schulen and see it on site.

The Oude Toren van Schulen is the oldest protected monument in Herk-de-Stad. The tower is the only witness of the first church or chapel. The base of the sturdy Gothic tower consists of Diest iron sandstone and the upper part is made of brick.

The old church tower of Schulen dates from the 15th century and is the oldest building in Herk, the city with a few sights that are not yet known by the entire population. It is one of the few towers that has a clock with a year on it and where the tower is still decorated with masonry signs. These magical masonry marks can still be found on old buildings and are regarded as signs of (super)stition. We also find this decorative composition with an extra message on the old church tower of Schulen. First of all, on the right we see the Calvary cross, which was placed as a protective sign against disaster. The foot of it refers to Golgotha or Calvary = the mountain where Jesus was crucified. We also find the chalice on the left as a sign of Christian faith. Filled colored chalices were also used in the past as defense systems against witchcraft. Since this tower was also a refuge for the population in case of impending disaster, such as plundering, the people found protection here and this was further reinforced by the signs that were placed on it, which meant a magical charge for them. These signs may have been applied during the reconstruction of the tower in 1709 and 1710. What is exceptional about this old tower is the clock that was applied to it with the year 1782 and the initials of its maker. This timepiece was a replacement for an old timepiece, probably made of wood, in 1782. We clearly see this in the wrought iron construction. It is a timepiece with only one hand, which was normal at the time.
