Pagan Chapel Wieringen

The height located at the crossroads of Bierdijkerveldweg, Stroeërweg and Smerperweg, belonging to the hamlet of Stroe on the former island of Wieringen, has been a mystical place since time immemorial. It is said that two ley lines intersect here. Writings about the site date back to the eighth century. The church described was blessed as a Christian church by the 1st bishop of Utrecht, Saint Willibrordus (658-739).

It is likely that the location has been used for religious purposes for some time. In pre-Christian times there was talk of a pagan temple. The name “Pagan Chapel”, used for centuries among the Wieringer population, refers to this. The history of the place is intertwined with legends and stories, such as the meaning of the pig, an image of which was present above the door of the demolished chapel, and about the lost golden clapper.

Today the place is used as a cemetery. We know the last structure that stood on top of it from a few brief descriptions and some images. It was a “chapel” built of tuff, which was more like a small church in appearance, and was popularly known as “the pagan chapel”.
