Ulsda lies on a moraine (ground moraine ridge). This is a ridge in the landscape that was created by the deposition of a glacier. Such a moraine contains different types of soil, including boulder clay and sometimes potting clay. Due to this elevation, Ulsda was never flooded during the dike breaches in the late Middle Ages and was an island for a while.
In Ulsda, as far as is known, the first brickwork of Oldambt was created in the 16th century.
