The statue's significance to Dunedin lies in the city's Scottish roots, which was founded in 1848 by the Free Church of Scotland. One of Dunedin's founding fathers ("spiritual leader") was Rev. Thomas Burns, a nephew of the poet.
The poetry of Robert Burns (1759-1796) became immensely popular in 19th century Scotland, and this enthusiasm was brought to Otago.
