The city is located in the Donau-Wald region on the Danube, on the Bogenbach and at the foot of the Bavarian Forest.

The highest elevations are in the district of Degernbach. The Eselsberg is 451 m high and an unnamed elevation near Nesselbach and Edenhofen is at about 475 m the highest point in the area of the city of Bogen. There are some areas near the Danube in the districts of Oberalteich, Bogen and Pfelling at an altitude of around 313 m.

Community organization The marriage of the Countess Ludmilla from Bogen to the Wittelsbach Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1204 was the basis for the lozenges in the Bavarian coat of arms.

After the death of the last Bogener son, Countess Ludmilla, the Wittelsbach dynasty adopted the Bavarian rhombuses in the house coat of arms, which in turn later significantly influenced today's state coat of arms of Bavaria.
