Paper Mill and "Board House"
Between 1830 and 1880, a paper mill operated on previously undeveloped land on the Gersprenz River in Hesse, directly on the border with Bavaria. Under several owners, one of these was a "cardboard lid factory," but it wasn't viable in the long run—especially since a proposed expansion was rejected by the local municipality of Harreshausen. After the property was auctioned off in 1890, most of the buildings were demolished.
After World War II, small pubs were built on both sides of the state border: on the Hessian side, the "Waldmühlschenke" (Wald Mill Inn), built of wood and featuring Babenhausen Michelsbräu, and on the Bavarian side, the most recently built "Papiermühl-Schenke" (Paper Mill Inn), serving Bavarian Eder beer from Großostheim. Both cottages were popular destinations, but over time, they became unprofitable and closed again.
