The monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses was built in the 9th century by order of Wilfredo el Velloso and intended for his daughter Emma (while the Ripoll monastery was intended for his son Radulfo). In this way, Emma became the first abbess of the monastery, which in turn became the first female monastery in Catalonia.
