    Gottlieben Castle

Gottlieben is one of the smallest municipalities in Switzerland in terms of area, but it has a long and eventful history.

Its castle goes back to the moated castle built in 1251 by Bishop Eberhard II Truchsess of Waldenburg, who wanted to place Gottlieben as a fortified trading place in competition with Constance, which was his enemy, but his plans ultimately failed.

The town's ring system, which was designed at the time, is still clearly visible today.

Konrad von Homburg attacked and burned Gottlieben in 1355, only the castle resisted him. 60 years later, during the Council of Constance, it became the prison of the deposed Pope John XXIII. and the Bohemian reformer, Magister Jan Hus, who died at the stake in Constance on June 6, 1415, breaking the imperial escort. His death triggered the Hussite Wars, which devastated half of Europe from Brandenburg to Bavaria and Hungary.

In 1526 Gottlieben lost the episcopal residence to Meersburg and with the Reformation the place adopted the Protestant faith. Gottlieben received its first school building in 1580.

A mysterious moated castle with Venetian magic, Gottlieben Castle

Gottlieben Castle is located on the eastern edge of the municipality of Gottlieben and stands directly on the banks of the Seerhein, a connecting water arm of the Lake Constance basin. A wooden bridge leads to the other bank. The construction of Gottlieber Castle was commissioned by the Constance Bishop Eberhard II in 1251. Since its renovation in the 19th century, the building has had a neo-Gothic lake front in the Venetian style. It was inhabited by various sovereigns, which we will discuss in more detail later. In 1950, the Swiss opera singer Lisa Della Casa bought the beautiful moated castle with her husband and lived there until her death in 2012.

During this period the castle was not open to the public and even now it can only be viewed from the outside. This opportunity is also taken advantage of by numerous tourists because the castle has a magical aura and is reminiscent of the architectural style of Venice. Although it is privately owned, it is one of the most valuable cultural monuments in Switzerland. Many millions of Swiss francs were invested in the preservation and restoration of Gottlieber Castle. The castle and complex are listed as cultural monuments and sights and are included in publications (brochures, illustrated books, hiking guides) about the Lake Constance circular route.
