Aletta Jacobs was born in Sappemeer as the eighth child of eleven children in a Jewish family. She was a daughter of Abraham Jacobs, surgeon and midwife, and Anna de Jongh. Jacobs was an early advocate of women's right to higher education. Her brother Eduard was the first Jewish mayor of the Netherlands. Her sister Charlotte was the second woman to graduate from the Netherlands.[7]

The reason she wanted to become a doctor was that she wanted to stand up for women's rights and she thought it was not fair that women were not allowed to become doctors.

In 1870 she was the first Dutch woman to be officially admitted to an HBS as a hearing aid. To do this, she attended the Rijks Hogere Burgerschool in her hometown, where women were normally not admitted. A year later she asked the liberal minister Thorbecke for permission to study at the university. The note with which she did so can still be seen in the National Archives, as well as the minister's answer, which is not addressed to herself but to her father. She was admitted as a medical student at the University of Groningen in 1871, initially for a trial period of one year, from Wikipedia
