The modest peak of Castelgomberto overlooks the plain of Marcesina, with a beautiful landscape. Precisely because of this view and position, it was fortified by the Italians to create an insurmountable fortress: the imposing natural wall facing north-west, from where the Austrian attacks came, was perforated and entrenched; under the cross, an observatory in a cave which can be accessed via steep stairs.
The toponym 'Castel' is perhaps due to the karstic rock wall.
