The old Winschoterdiep has been diverted here. In the early 1970s, the Winschoterdiep was led around Hoogezand and Sappemeer. A small piece is still preserved. In the center of Sappemeer and Hoogezand it has been deeply filled in. The map shows both the old and the current Winschoterdiep.
