In ancient times, this street was called via della Lupa, because there was a lupanare, or brothel (in recent times, via della Lupa is the name assigned to a road located a short distance from it).Another name was also via di San Giacomo, due to the homonymous church dating back to the 11th century and suppressed, therefore used for a long time as a warehouse. The name vicolo del Carbone, from which it then passed to the denomination in use, is linked to the coal depot that was active for a long time in the building opposite the church of San Giacomo. In Ferrara, this trade was the exclusive right of the corporation of the Blacksmiths' Guild.
