History
The gradual drying up of the branch of the Po running along the southern front of Ferrara caused, between the end of the 14th and the first half of the 15th century, the union of the ancient river island of Sant'Antonio in Polesine with the built-up area.
The further drying up of the Po led first Leonello d'Este (1407-1450) and above all his successor Borso (1413-1471) to have the whole area between Castel Nuovo and the Barbacane di San Giorgio to the south-east protected with new walls. .
In 1451 along the line of the “New Walls” the doors of San Pietro, dell'Amore and San Giorgio were opened, then walled up and / or modified in the following two centuries.
