    Tips

The ascent (approx. 400 m from the power station at the end of the valley) is evenly distributed over wide paths. Once the levada has been reached (at about 1000 m above sea level), it is a few kilometers on a flat course to the descent route. The levada offers the full program: numerous tunnels with windows (lamp helpful), a bridge, waterfalls, overhanging rocks. In some places there is no rope railing and you definitely need sure-footedness and a head for heights (in sections 40 cm wide concrete wall). But in my opinion there is one of the best levada routes past steep rock faces in a wonderful, jungle-like valley with great views. Don't go when it's raining (danger of falling rocks).

November 2025: The Levada da Faja da Nogueira is currently being repaired and is therefore closed (signposted only at the entrance to the levada coming from the power station). The first 700 meters are still manageable. But after that, it becomes too dangerous. Both the levada path and the levada wall are so badly damaged by rockfalls and landslides that it's life-threatening.

So it's best to wait until it's repaired and reopened.

Tip: It's better to explore the opposite Levada da Serra do Faial; a whole new world awaits you beyond the tunnel!
