The Maria Chapel was built in the years 1954-1957 with medieval building materials. The stones come from the foundations of the old monastery of Sibculo; the roof beams are from an old saxon farmhouse. Money, volunteer labor and design have been provided by the local community, while some local farmers have brought in the materials. Herman Liedenbaum, trained as a house painter, but also an amateur historian and artist, provided the construction drawings.
