Its construction of hewn granite blocks suggests that it was built in the second half of the 13th century. The towerless hall building was extensively damaged during the Thirty Years' War and rebuilt in later years. The conversions are baroque. Today the fieldstone masonry of the church and churchyard wall is in dire need of repair.
It is not known whether the church had a tower made of stone or wood, but there is a carefully worked pointed arch portal on the west side, which was subsequently walled up. In the churchyard there is a wooden bell tower that carries the two bells. After an arson attack a few years ago, it was fully repaired. The listed bells survived the metal collection in the Hamburg Bell Cemetery unscathed during the Second World War; it is said that a third bell once existed, but nothing is known about its whereabouts. The older bell dates from the 14th to 15th centuries, the younger from the 16th century.
