The choir of St. Bartholomew's Church was built at the end of the 13th century; it is the oldest part of the church. A few years later the sacristy was built. The church was consecrated in 2001 to Saint Bartholomew. During the Thirty Years War was damaged, but rebuilt. The nave was built at the end of the 15th century, probably also the chapel on the south side. The latter was replaced in 1878 by today's south portal. It served as a stairway to the galleries.

The brick church tower was built in 1886-1887 according to the plans of Stralsund city architect Ernst von Haselberg. Before that there was a truss tower, which was built in 1723. In today's tower hang bells from the years 1447, 1601 (Stralsund, Albrecht Huve) and 1821 (Stralsund, Simon Zach).

From 1999 to June 2000, because of the strong sponge infestation, the nave was renovated and the roof in the area of the nave re-covered. Also in 1999 was begun with the renovation of the south portal and in 2002 with the renovation of the church tower and the interior. This was completed in 2003. In 2014, the sacristy was renovated.
