Former brickworks in Klausdorf am Mellensee

Clay deposits around Klausdorf am Mellensee reached down to the earth's surface and necessitated intensive use for several decades. Before the Thirty Years' War there was already a brick barn here. The residents of Klausdorf dealt with grain cultivation, fishing and brick production. When the waterway to Berlin was expanded in 1856-1864 and the Royal Prussian Military Railway was built around 1874-1875 with a stop at Rehagen-Klausdorf station, the transport of the bricks was made easier and brick production in Klausdorf became the main source of income. From 1868 the first large brickworks (Maass, Fasskessel, Arndt) were built. The Klausdorf brickworks Arndt and Fasskessel received their own siding.

Brick production in Klausdorf came to an end in the mid-1990s.

Klausdorf was built around 1250 and was named after its founder Nikolaus.

Due to the fact that many brickworks were built in Klausdorf, the place gained economic importance. Around 1913 there were 4 brickworks in Klausdorf alone, which produced up to 50 million bricks a year. These were then transported to Berlin and Hamburg by rail or barge via the Notte Canal. Remnants of this period are a still functional brickworks with a typical ring kiln and the clay pits that are filled with water.
