The Averau refuge is located in the Cinque Torri and Lagazuoi area and is accessible on foot, on skis or via the chairlift from the Giau pass. The paths leading here from almost all sides are initially stony, but then turn into gentle meadows. Various paths branch off from the nearby Forcella di Nuvolau which lead to the Giau pass, Andraz castle, Cernadoi and the Averau via ferrata. The view from this place is of extraordinary beauty.

The Averau refuge is a hiking refuge located at Forcella Nuvolau, between the municipalities of Cortina d'Ampezzo and Colle Santa Lucia, in the Cinque Torri Group.

Its history begins towards the end of the 19th century, with the construction of a simple wooden studio apartment without foundations. In 1903 the Finazzer family built a two-storey masonry structure with four rooms. The place was opened with the name Nuvolaupaβhütte (Forcella Nuvolau refuge). In 1916, during the First World War, it was occupied by the Italian Army, which made it its headquarters on the Cinque Torri front, sheltered from the Lagazuoi artillery. A field hospital for first aid and other small wooden buildings for logistical purposes were set up around the refuge. After the First World War, the property returned to the Finazzer family, who reopened the structure in the summer. In 1974, with the development of the tourist area of the Giau pass, the Finazzer family began reconstruction work. In 1980 Sandro Siorpaes and his wife Paola De Lorenzi purchased the never completed building. In 1982 the refuge was reopened with its current name. Other renovation works followed in 1985 and 1988, but 2010 was the turning point. The refuge is completely rebuilt as we see it today, a modern and welcoming charming structure known for its cuisine.
