The task that the Unterstedter Spiekerverein wrote into the statutes exactly three and a half years ago has now found its crowning fulfillment in the presence of numerous guests: the Unterstedter Spieker was officially inaugurated last Saturday and handed over to its purpose.

"Our granary is finished and can now become the center of the association and maybe also of the village," explains the first chairman of the association, Dr. Diederich Sommerwerck is visibly proud of the work which, after only three and a half years of planning and implementation, will now enrich the Unterstedter townscape surrounded by magnificent oak trees: the restored stairwell, which is estimated to be almost 200 years old. According to the statutes of the association, the Spieker should serve as a repository for the archive material already collected about Unterstedt, but also as an exhibition space for existing historical equipment. "In the basement, small exhibitions are shown continuously on the 25 square meter floor space," promises Sommerwerck and opens the door for a small look inside. It's cozy - with a table in the middle "to which we would like to invite old people from Unterstedt so that they can tell us about the past". These audio or video recordings should then be kept on the upper floor and thus be preserved for posterity. They have come a long way: three and a half years ago, 25 committed citizens met for the first time in the local history association and set themselves the main task of building a small half-timbered house. Shortly thereafter, they discovered an old granary in Hartmut Müller's yard and were immediately hooked: One or none was the motto. The local council was also interested in this project with 40,000 marks made available in a hurry. An additional 15,000 marks from the district made this project a reality. "But it would not have been possible without our enormous personal contribution," confirms Sommerwerck. Since breaking ground in June 1994, the people of Unterstedt have worked tirelessly for 900 hours on their Spieker. The next step is to build an oven. With this energy, the next inauguration in Unterstedt is imminent.
