The Abbot's House—the town house of Harsefeld Abbey—provided refuge for the archabbots in times of need, as Buxtehude was well fortified until the 17th century. The cellar dates back to the early decades of the 15th century. The current building was likely erected between 1618 and 1628, as indicated by an inscription on a beam inside the house. The gable-fronted hall house remained structurally intact until 1975, when it was acquired by the Buxtehude Local History Society and rebuilt almost unchanged, using the original building components.
