Gernika-Lumo is a town with its own charm, with a unique history, with a heritage worth noting, with tasty cuisine and a natural environment that make it one of the most charming municipalities in Urdaibai, Bizkaia and Euskadi.

Founded in 1366 by Don Tello, whose statue presides over the Plaza de los Fueros, its history took an abrupt change when in 1937 it suffered a tragic bombing by German aircraft, which destroyed 90% of the town. Curiously, important buildings, such as the Casa de Juntas and the Tree of Gernika or the Church of Santa María, remained intact. Since then, Gernika-Lumo has worked on its reconstruction based on forgiveness, and proof of this is the Peace Museum that the town houses to spread the culture of Peace.

Gernika is a symbol of Basque liberties for being the cradle of the Tree of Gernika, and it is also a municipality that proudly keeps its traditions. Every Monday it is the meeting point for the baserritarras of the region, who come to the market with their best products; the Jai Alai pediment is an emblem of the punta basket; and the name Gernika is linked to authentic gastronomic delights, such as beans and peppers.
