The Iditarod National Historic Trail was established in 1978 to commemorate the last great American gold rush. It joins Seward to Nome and is a true journey through Alaskan history. The name comes from the wide winter trail that was used in those times to transport gold on dog sleds.

Every year it takes place the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog RaceI, an extreme race of about 1,600 kilometer between Anchorage and Nome.
