Read more about the girl of Yde, the famous bog body of Drenthe, here.

It is a perfectly preserved body of a young girl who lived some 2000 years ago, during the late Iron Age, in what is now the village of Yde in the province of Drenthe.

The girl of Yde was discovered in 1897 by two workers digging peat in the Bourtanger swamp. They came across a gruesome find: the body of a young girl preserved in the bog. The girl was estimated to be 16 years old at the time of her death.

What makes the Yde Girl so remarkable is its exceptional state of preservation. The body has remained almost completely intact, including the hair and clothing. This makes it a valuable source of information about life and death in prehistoric times.

Investigations have shown that the girl was probably strangled before being buried in the bog. However, the reason behind her death remains unclear and has led to speculation. Some theories suggest a ritual sacrificial death, while others think it may have been a crime.
