In the Scharperswijk nature reserve (52 hectares) south of Lexmond, time seems to have stood still. Here you will still find the authentic plot pattern of the Vijfheerenlanden, with elongated plots full of grasslands and pilot whales. Willows used to be harvested in those pilot whales, which were used for baskets and fences, among other things. The Zuid-Hollands Landschap still harvests willows in part of the pilot whales just as it used to. This is how we maintain the pilot whale culture. Let's get rid of the other part. There are now large oaks and plants such as royal herb and yellow iris grow there.
