Not much remains of the Hut-Hannes House. If you walked along the ravine from Stolzenhain to Königsmühle, it was the first house on the right. To the left of the house, a sad-looking wooden angel stands on a tall pole.

Abandoned places in the former territory of the Sudeten Germans.
In the Ore Mountains, very close to the popular spa town of Oberwiesenthal, one comes across the remains of a few houses. They belong to the Königsmühle settlement. What happened to the families who lived here?

For almost three million Germans in Czechoslovakia, the end of World War II did not mean peace, but the beginning of an agonizing martyrdom that would leave deep wounds for generations to come. The story of the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans is a tale of loss: the loss of loved ones, belongings, all rights and the loss of home - the place where Germans and Czechs lived peacefully together for centuries.
Abandoned places like Königsmühle in the Ore Mountains have become a symbol of this story. Immediately after the end of the war, all 53 residents of Königsmühle were expelled. Rosemarie Ernst, probably the last German born in Königsmühle, reports on this and the trauma that the months-long odyssey to Germany left behind for her and many of the displaced persons. Today Rosemarie Ernst lives in Oberwiesenthal, within sight of her hometown of Königsmühle. Young Czechs and Germans are working together to preserve Königsmühle as a monument, but also as a place to celebrate together.

Every year in August the Land Art Festival, founded by Petr Miksicek, takes place. Miksicek discovered the place during his hikes through the Sudeten Mountains, and since then the photographer and nature lover has been fascinated by this "lost civilization". "We know about the legendary Incas and Mayas," he says, "but we also know about this place - 70 kilometers from Prague."
